The finest senior golfers in the world enjoy a schedule that takes them in all directions across the globe, but throughout the entire season everyone of them has his eye on the final stop.
That’s because since 2009 the Legends Tour has ended every season in the Indian Ocean – and this year is no different with a 16th visit to Constance Belle Mare Plage for the MCB Mauritius Legends tournament.
In that time, the quality of the players who have lifted the trophy has been nothing short of stellar. There was the one-time World No. 1 and 1996 British Open champion Tom Lehman in 2011, the prolific PGA Tour winner David Frost a year later and the eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner Colin Montgomerie in 2015. Nor should we forget Europe’s 2018 Ryder Cup winning captain Thomas Bjorn who carded a sensational 61 when winning in 2022.
There is one name missing from the roll call of legends and it is the Englishman Peter Baker who will start this year’s tournament hoping to complete an unprecedented hat trick of wins in Mauritius following triumphs in both 2023 and 2024. The omens, moreover, are good for him because he won in Greece earlier this year and has recent top five finishes in Germany and Italy.
Challenging Baker for favouritism is the Australian Scott Hend whose enduring quality in his fifth season of senior golf is revealed by his continuing competitive presence on the Asian Tour. A winner in Barbados and Spain this year, he was also fourth in the Senior British Open. He leads the Legends Tour’s Order of Merit and will be keen to improve on his debut at Constance Belle Mare Plage last year when he finished T27th.
Among those most likely to challenge Baker and Hend are the South African pair of Keith Horne and James Kingston. Both are not only winners this year, they also boast excellent course form: Horne was third on his debut last year alongside Kingston who is also a two-time runner-up.
Don’t overlook an exciting trio of rookies – the big-hitting Swede Johan Edfors, Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher and his 2014 Ryder Cup team-mate Jamie Donaldson of Wales. Donaldson won the European Senior Masters in just his second start as a veteran in November, and he is also has secret course form at Constance Belle Mare Plage having won the Mauritius Open there in 2008. He will be the man to beat.
The first round action starts on the Legend Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage on December 5.
